Aside from their specificity, enzymes often offer other benefits that stretch beyond the product itself, that is, going beyond product performance or process optimization. Enzymes can often replace chemicals or processes that present safety or environmental issues. For example, enzymes can be used to do the following:

Replace acids in the starch processing industry;

Replace acids, alkalis, or oxidizing agents in fabric desizing;

Reduce the use of sulfide in tanneries;

Replace pumice stones for “stonewashing” jeans, reducing waste;

Allow more complete food digestion in animals fed enzymes, reducing animal waste per pound gained;

Act as stain removers in laundry products . This allows clothes to be washed at lower temperatures, saving energy. Enzymes can substitute for chlorine bleach to remove stains on cloth. Enzymes also allow the level of surfactants to be reduced and permit the cleaning of clothes in the absence of phosphates; and

Act very specifically (unlike other catalysts) and under mild reaction conditions, allowing selective reactions in the presence of sensitive chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of desizing, scouring, bleaching, peroxide neutralizing, biopolishing with chemicals are not specific in action and very harsh to textile substrate and environment. It required huge amount of energy and create high water and air pollution but enzymes are very specific in action, highly efficient, non-toxic, and eco-friendly characteristics, required low energy and create very less water and air pollution hence the use of enzymes in the textile industry is rapidly growing
Generally shelf-life of enzyme is 6 months but it can be extended through, maintain the storage condition below 25 degree Celsius, avoiding contamination, using low TDS and chlorine free water for formulation.
The main application of amylases in textile finishing is desizing, which involves the degradation of starch. These enzymes hydrolyze the starch molecules into small fragments that can be easily washed away or dissolved in hot water. There are main three types of amylases regarding the temperature condition.
Detergent with enzymes get to rid of tough stains which breakdown this stains and easily wash of at lower temperature and lower amount of water. Selection of enzyme in detergent is based on types of stain like
  • ● Pectinase enzyme for stain like fruit, fruit juices, jelly, jams, sauces
  • ● Protease enzyme for stains like Blood, milk, egg, meat, sweat from human body.
  • ● Lipase enzyme for stains like fats, butter, salad oil, sauces.
  • ● Amylase enzyme for carbohydrate base stains
  • ● Mannanase enzyme for stains like chocolate, tomato ketchup, ice cream and thickening agent
  • No, because enzymes used in textile process are acidic or neutral condition which works at pH below 7.0 and for detergent we required alkaline enzymes which works at pH above 9.0
    Detergent with enzymes very easily get to rid stains as compared to detergent without enzyme. Enzymatic detergent works at lower temperature hence saves energy and time, Amount of water required is also low as stains are easily remove and overall appearance of article is more bright and fresh.
    The benefits of enzymes are becoming better realised as more research is done. For the animal, enzymes optimize gut health, produce uniform growth and enhance overall health. For the producer, they decrease feed costs and improve profitability. Each type of enzyme has its own specific function and therefore does not interfere with one another.
